We want to help kickstart a new plant-passion for you! We have compiled a list of our personal favourite plants that we began with, along with how to care for them. These plants sparked our curiosity and helped us successfully dip our toes into the indoor plant keeping world!
This hobby of ours all began with a snake plant! (Sansieveria Laurnetii- photographed above on the stool). These plants are pretty fool proof, and very forgiving. They can be placed in a corner that receives minimal light, and be forgotten, though recommend placing them in a room with good natural!
Water your snake plant approx. once a month through the dark winter months, or when the pot is fully dry.
“One of our favourite beginner plants is pothos! They look amazing in a hanging macrame planter or trailing over the edge of a shelf! ”
Top 5 easy care plants
Whether you're a beginner, or are on the hunt for some low maintenance plants, we think this article will help you decide what plants are best for your space!
#1 ZZ PLANT
This guy is number one on our list of easy plants because they thrive on neglect. Although we never recommend placing plants in dark rooms or shadowy corners of your house, the zz plant can withstand it. Water them only when they're completely dry and fertilize sparingly.
#2 SANSIEVERIA
Better known as a snake plant or mother-in-laws tongue these hardy plants are nearly impossible to kill. They come in a variety of colours, shapes & varying patterns, they are amazing for adding texture and colour to any space, and can grow to an impressive size. They do not like a ton of direct light (though they will tolerate bright morning light) and can be placed in a bright room. We prefer to keep them near an east-facing window, though any direction should suffice! water only when dry, and only fertilize with half-strength organic fertilizer in the summer months (and if you forget, thats okay too!)
#3 POTHOS
This is the plant that got us hooked! Pothos comes in a variety of forms and colour variegations and are perfect for hanging macrame planters, trailing over shelves & ledges. Their long vines can be trained to grow up a totem, or creep along your wall because they grow long beautiful vines. Water only when the top 50% of soil is dry, and place in low light to bright in-direct light. Check out the shop to see our Pearls & Jade Pothos and Marble Queen Pothos!
#4 HOYA PLANTS
Commonly called wax plant, hoya is a large group of long-lived vines (usually climbing or trailing) most often found in tropical forests. They adapt well to different light levels—which is part of what makes them great houseplants. Hoya’s thick, waxy leaves store water, so no worries if you forget to water it from time to time—another helpful houseplant trait. When conditions are right, long, leafless tendrils give rise to clusters of fragrant star-shape waxy flowers that bloom for weeks. Check out the different varieties in our shop, HERE
#5 MONSTERA DELICIOSA
This plant was once popular a few decades ago, and it is back with a vengeance! Monstera deliciosa is one of the trendiest houseplants that you can grow these days. The beauty of this plant is that it is really great at water storage. The large juicy roots and thick stems store water so it isn’t a plant that you need to worry about drying out. If it does get thirsty, it will show you by wilting and a deep watering will perk it right up. I don’t let it get to the point of wilting often, however, and I typically water it when the soil has dried to 80%. They enjoy bright light, but wilt and burn easily in the hot summer sun, so keep these guys in bright shade! It will reward you with large beautiful, split leaves and rapid growth!
We currently have these beauties in our shop, in 6 inch & 10 inch pots! CHECK THEM OUT!
